These star athletes who walk the halls of Black Hills High School, earned featured athlete. With their hard work and commitment, their peers recognized them as standout athletes this fall.
Sydney Lowe is an elite soccer player, who has been leading the wolves to a 10-2-0 record. When asked what Sydney’s biggest accomplishment in sports was, she said “Going to the 2nd round of state last year in soccer.” During the High School season, Sydney practices every day. She also plays club soccer and practices 2-3 times a week outside of the high school season. Her team is 2nd in the state for Division 1. Sydney’s older sister Whitney was a star here at Black Hills and is still playing at Central Washington. Sydney said she is the better soccer player between the two. She plans to play soccer at a Division 1 or Division 2, and is receiving interest from Eastern Washington and Central Washington.
Devin Herbert, is the unexpected phenom! Her biggest accomplishment was getting to play soccer this year, because she was going to play volleyball, but then she made varsity for soccer after trying out late. She trains every weekday for school soccer, and she used to play club soccer for the Puget Sound Slammers. When the team fell apart, she played for the TSC Lions. The phenom came in and made a statement and earned a varsity spot, as just a freshman. She said starting as a freshman is fun, because she gets to meet upperclassmen and make new friends, but sometimes it’s a challenge she says.
Emma Goodman, the volleyball team’s starting Libero and Co-Captain, is leading the wolves to a nice season with a record of 7-5. Emmas biggest accomplishment in volleyball would be never giving up on a team or a player, and having faith in all her coaches. Emma plays club volleyball for Capital Ice Volleyball Club. She plans to play College volleyball, but she just hasn’t decided yet.
Star Golfer, and state competitor Ryan Ziebart clinched a spot for a chance at a state title yet again this year. Ryan’s biggest accomplishment is being a team captain the whole year, and helping his teammates. He spends 2-5 hours a day working on his golf game. After high school, he plans to play golf at Grays Harbor Community College.
The star Tennis player, Gunnar Nelson went to state last year, and is headed back to state this year. Gunnar’s biggest accomplishment in sports is placing 8th in state last year (as a sophomore) with his brother. Gunnar plays everyday during the season, and try’s to train everyday in the offseason. He doesn’t know where yet, but plans to play tennis in college.
Ava Shackell, the speedy runner, is a league champ as just a sophomore. Ava’s biggest accomplishment is medalling at state, her freshman year! She typically runs everyday, and runs about 5 to 6 miles, depending on if they are preparing for a race or recovering from a race. Ava plans to run on a college team, running in college is definitely a goal for Ava. Ava should start to see some interest from colleges after a stellar sophomore season.
